Why come to Thunderground Sound instead of doing it yourself at home?

There are many reasons to come to Thunderground Sound for your next recording, rather than a DIY approach at home. Let’s look at five important ones.

  • Microphones – While a good ol’ Shure SM57 is indeed one of the most widely used recording microphones, it’s not well-suited for all applications. We have a large selection of great dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones from which to choose for each instrument or voice. The signal chain from instrument-to-mic-to-preamp-to recording media is always on our minds here at Thunderground.

  • Preamps, preamps, preamps! – Similar to choosing the right microphone for the job, choosing the right preamplifier is equally important. The palette of preamps in our rack makes it possible to pair the microphone and instrument/vocal with the best preamp, whether it’s a neutral-sounding FET preamp or a warm tube preamp. (See our Equipment Page on this website for a complete listing of microphones and preamps, along with other equipment available here at Thunderground Sound)

  • Space – You can certainly get some good sounds in a single room, but having a separate control room, plus the option of an isolation booth or two can make a huge difference in the recording and mixing experience.

  • Room for several players at once – Most home studios are a single room, and often a small one, at that. The main live room at Thunderground Sound can easily accommodate a 5- or 6-piece band recording together in the same space. Especially for a band used to playing together, being in the same space while recording can create some great vibes and ideas. We like to say we can record an entire symphony orchestra here…..six pieces at a time!

  • Expertise – Along with great equipment and a cool, comfortable space, we’ve got years – dare I say decades? – of experience in the recording business to help you make decisions about creating and capturing your music. And, we’re also musicians ourselves, so we can see the recording world from both sides of the glass.
